The maid..

..Rather known as the office help.

She came in looking for a job …introduced herself…Nze Aisha Nakibirango..noonya mulimo gwonna naye nina omwaana. Literally meaning, am Aisha Nakibirango and am searching for any job but I have a child.

Me and my counterpart thought, what the hell. We were getting tired of having to come to work in the morning and dusting the place up, doing the dishes….etc. We agreed to 20,000 though she had asked for 15,000. We felt sorry for the fact that she has a child and needs the job more than anybody else. So she was hired.

Come Monday, she came in much earlier than the rest of us. She was so upbeat and happy. Cleaned, scrubbed and dusted the whole place. We were thinking to ourselves….this is gonna be fun. She even borrowed a hoe and dug the outside…front office and back. She used to work for the people that occupierd the office before we did so she is more popular than us in this area. That makes her feel like she is the queen of the PACK.

Now the drama begins.

She came in Tuesday with all these stories of how the father of her child had abandoned them. Did I mention she has a child? He is called Bashir which by the way she pronounces as BASHIIIRIII…. He cries like a baby…oh, he is a baby! Anyway, he cries a little bit more than we anticipated…I told her to try and keep him under control because this is an office, she says he cries because he has nothing else to do.!

So anyway, the stories… she narrated how the husband left her for another woman. Something that is very usual in these zones. What pisses her off is the act that he still comes to her place but does not bring them any thing…..she’s actually planning to report to the police……blab la bla…. My workmate and I are thinking what the hell!!!>>>????> she went on and on and on… I consoled her and hoped that was going to be the end of the confiding sessions.

Wednesday was even worse. She had this sad look on her face and when I asked her what was bothering her….she just continued from the previous story. I then asked her if she has any other kids. She told me about the first child she had with a Christian man who was mistreated by her dad who by the way is a hajji and cannot stand Christian men. He suffered so much under the wrath of her father till he could not take it anymore and left her for another woman. The good thing, she says is the fact that he is from western Uganda and milk is in abundance so her child must be happy with all the milk flowing on the village paths…lol.. She however feels sorry for her son who has nothing more than breast milk to survive on.

When she is narrating her stories, she looks like a little girl reporting to teacher…at some point I thought that she was not ok upstairs….but maybe not.

Today, she came in so depressed. Some how her depression wears off on us…… not fair I must Say. She requested that I give her some money each week since she has no food at home and the posho she had in reserve has run out. All the people she used to wor for before do not hire anymore and sher lost all customers when she went to the village in jinja…blab la bla… she even went on to tell us that she is of mixed tribes. She has a mixture of soga, gisu, samya ,gwere ,padhola and daama blood!! Speaking of eastern connection!.. since she is working for 20,000 a month, she will be getting 5,000 a week. We agreed and she was very grateful. Now she is in the kitchen doing the dishes and am asking myself, what story is she brewing for tomorrow?

Lets watch this space but am sure there’s more coming soon.
